What Is Claude? Its Features and Best Uses, Explained in Comparison with ChatGPT

"How Is It Different from ChatGPT?"

As the use of generative AI spreads, Claude is attracting attention alongside ChatGPT.
Although people are hearing the name more often, many find it hard to understand "how it differs from ChatGPT" and "what kinds of work it is suited for."
I myself used to think, "ChatGPT can do all sorts of things, broadly if not deeply, so that's all I need."

Like ChatGPT, Claude is an AI that understands and generates text,
but it has been developed as an AI with a different design philosophy and different strengths.

In this article, with Claude as the main focus and comparisons to ChatGPT along the way, we clearly lay out

  • What kind of AI Claude is
  • How it differs from ChatGPT
  • How best to choose between them at work

Why Claude Is Attracting Attention

While many people think of ChatGPT when they hear "generative AI,"
Claude has recently been attracting attention as "an AI that feels a little different to use than ChatGPT."

We explain this in detail later, but the reason is that it has features such as

  • Reading long texts carefully
  • A consistent tone in its answers
  • Strength in organizing thoughts and structuring writing

Whereas ChatGPT has evolved as "a general-purpose AI that can do anything,"
Claude is designed as an AI centered on reading comprehension and supporting logical thinking.

Claude = An AI That Doesn't Leave Judgments of Right and Wrong Too Much to People

Claude is a conversational generative AI developed by Anthropic, and the defining feature
that makes Claude what it is lies in "a design philosophy that emphasizes safety and consistency for people."

This is based on an approach called "Constitutional AI,"
in which the AI itself generates answers while referring to predefined rules and values.

That may sound a bit technical, but simply put, it is designed to respond flexibly to users' instructions
while not being pulled too strongly by any particular individual's values or emotions.

As a result, Claude tends to

  • Use gentle expressions
  • Stay on track in conversations
  • Give answers that take context into account

This is a major difference from ChatGPT, which strongly reflects human judgment and feedback
and whose strengths are speed and flexibility.

So What Is Claude Good For?

Strong at Reading Long Texts

One of Claude's great strengths is its ability to handle very long texts at once. For example, it excels at taking in documents such as

  • Contracts
  • Specifications
  • Academic papers
  • Long internal documents

and then

  • Organizing the key points,
  • Rewriting the structure to make it easier to understand, and
  • Summarizing while preserving the context

ChatGPT can also process long texts,
but Claude has the edge when it comes to "organizing without breaking the flow of the whole text."

Skilled at Supporting Thought Organization and Writing Structure

Claude also avoids flashy expressions and excessive phrasing,
producing output that emphasizes logical flow and consistency.

That makes it well suited to uses such as:

  • Policy documents
  • Internal rules
  • Explanatory materials
  • Writing that requires logical rigor

It is an AI that is easy to use for purposes like these.

ChatGPT, on the other hand, excels at divergent tasks such as

  • Generating a wide range of ideas
  • Increasing variations in expression

Summing Up the Differences Between ChatGPT and Claude

In addition, ChatGPT is extremely well equipped as a business tool, with features such as

  • Integration with external tools
  • Creating tables and graphs
  • Generating program code
  • Image generation and image understanding
  • Creating your own custom AI (GPTs)

Claude, by contrast, has a relatively simple interface and controls,
and is designed specifically for reading text, organizing ideas, and structuring lines of reasoning.

In summary, it becomes easier to choose between them if you think of their roles this way:

  • Claude: stronger at organizing thoughts. An AI that organizes ideas and pulls them together logically
  • ChatGPT: stronger in breadth of features. An AI that moves work forward while broadening ideas
