8th CSPI-EXPO 2026 Report: On-Site Coverage of the Latest Construction and Surveying Technologies

The 8th CSPI-EXPO (International Construction and Survey Productivity Improvement Expo) was held at Makuhari Messe for four days, from June 17 (Wed) to June 20 (Sat). Positioned as a business-negotiation exhibition for construction companies, surveying companies, and other industry professionals, it drew 62,209 visitors, including 54,871 B2B users, and featured a record 3,450 booth units.

The construction industry faces many challenges, including labor shortages, an aging workforce of engineers, and aging infrastructure, and attention is increasingly turning to construction DX as a way to improve productivity.

In this article, we report on the challenges facing the construction industry that came to light at the exhibition, the latest solutions proposed by various companies, and what the WAN booth was like.

The current state of construction sites and their challenges

The construction industry currently faces major challenges in the shortage of workers and the aging of skilled engineers.

In addition, while sites are becoming more digital thanks to the spread of i-Construction and BIM/CIM promoted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, many companies struggle with training people who can use these technologies and with making effective use of the data they acquire.

  • Training young engineers and passing on skills: It is difficult to secure trainers, and training on actual machines is costly
  • Growing need for an educational environment where people can learn about hazards through realistic experience: There are many hazards, such as contact with heavy machinery, but there are limits to conveying the risks that lead to accidents through classroom lectures alone
  • Challenges in sharing site information: Integration with point cloud data and BIM/CIM has not progressed, travel is needed for on-site checks, and it takes time to align understanding with clients

WAN's next-generation excavator simulator "METATORE" and the 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) viewer "Machica" are considered highly compatible with these real on-site challenges.

Next-generation excavator simulator "METATORE"

The next-generation excavator simulator "METATORE" is an excavator simulator designed to train construction machinery operators. It allows trainees to practice operating heavy machinery safely and efficiently in a virtual space that recreates actual construction sites.

Features of METATORE

  • A realistic operating feel close to that of an actual machine
  • Scenario customization to match your site environment and training content
  • Records operation data and quantifies proficiency
  • Can be deployed on PCs and VR headsets

Because trainees can safely experience hazardous situations that are difficult to reproduce in training on actual machines, it also helps improve the quality of safety education.
Another major advantage is that it can standardize the skills of experienced operators and enable efficient skill transfer.

At the venue, many visitors tried it for themselves, and it drew strong interest as a human resource development solution for construction DX.

Expected benefits

  • More efficient training of new employees
  • Reduced training costs
  • Greater safety awareness
  • Support for skill transfer

Many children also tried it, and we felt it could become a way to spark their interest in the civil engineering and construction industry.

About Machica

Another product that drew a lot of attention at the WAN booth was "Machica."

Machica is a next-generation 3D viewer that uses 3DGS (Gaussian Splatting) technology, a solution that supports site visualization and information sharing.

Features of Machica

It can recreate site conditions, which were hard to convey with conventional photos and drawings alone, as a realistic 3D space.

  • High-definition 3D display of sites
  • Overlay display of BIM/CIM models
  • Comment sharing
  • Distance measurement
  • Document attachment
  • Viewable in a browser

A key feature is that no dedicated software is required, so everyone involved can share the same site space.

Because site conditions can be understood without visiting the site, it also contributes to greater work efficiency and less travel time.
At the venue, demos using actual 3D spaces were held, and many visitors took notice of its realistic expressive power.

Expected benefits

  • Checking existing conditions before construction
  • Making use of BIM/CIM
  • Building consensus with clients
  • Managing construction progress
  • Infrastructure maintenance and management
  • Disaster surveys

The beta version is currently available free of charge.
