"Genboku" Comes to the Prefectural University of Hiroshima! A Calligraphy Event for International Students

On July 24, 2026 (Fri), World Area Networks Co., Ltd. (Hiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture) held a hands-on event using our in-house product "Genboku" as part of a project carried out at the Prefectural University of Hiroshima.
The event was held as part of the "Genboku Project (Genboku PJ)," a collaborative project with students of the Prefectural University of Hiroshima. It was planned to share the appeal of Japanese culture with international students through an experience that combines calligraphy and digital art.
What is Genboku?

A performance content that fuses calligraphy and digital art using projection mapping. By adding visual effects to calligraphy works, such as trails of light that follow the brushstrokes, it delivers a dynamic visual experience.
Planning inbound tourism content using calligraphy brushes
This event is one of the outcomes of "Genboku PJ," a long-term project with the Prefectural University of Hiroshima that began in January 2026.
In this project, students are drawing on their own perspectives to plan and explore not only how to address the declining demand for calligraphy brushes, but also how to convey Japanese culture more attractively to foreign tourists.
A calligraphy event for international students

On the day, we held a calligraphy experience using "Genboku" for students, including international students.
Participants placed their finished works on a dedicated stand and pressed a button to experience projection mapping effects that switch at random. By combining calligraphy works with video, each person could enjoy a different presentation.

We also held an activity in which all the students together wrote the characters for "Kigyobu Connecthol" (Entrepreneurship Club Connecthol). Light effects appeared in real time following the movement of the brush, and once the work was complete, a special projection mapping was projected at the press of a button, bringing excitement to the venue.
Looking ahead
Through "Genboku," a hands-on content that fuses visual technology with Japanese culture, WAN is working with educational institutions and local communities to share new aspects of Japanese culture's appeal.
We will continue collaborating with students and work on planning and developing content for a wide audience, including inbound visitors.
