DIG Nembutsu project 2016 | Hiroshima Seinen Soryo Shunjukai

In 2016, we worked on a special projection mapping project held at Hongwanji Hiroshima Betsuin, creating a one-night-only video show where tradition and innovation intersected, using the magnificent architecture of the main hall as the stage.

Accurately measuring the shape of the main hall

The first thing we did at the start of the project was to precisely measure the shape of the main hall.
To capture every detail of the building, we brought the structure of the main hall in as digital data.
This allowed us to create visuals that fit the hall's unique shape perfectly, achieving projection mapping that made the most of the beauty of the architecture.

Visuals created by all participants together

The biggest feature of this project was its interactive element.
In one scene, all participants chant the nembutsu together, and we built in a system that changes the visuals in real time according to the rhythm and volume of the chanting.
The participants' voices influenced the visuals, providing an experience in which everyone seemed to come together as one to create the imagery.
